WEBSTER – William G. “Bill” Mannion, 94, formerly of Dudley, died Wednesday, August 15, 2012 in The Lower Cape Fear Hospice, Wilmington, NC following a short illness. His loving wife of 58 years, Doris B. “Dot” (Underhill) Mannion, died in 1997.
He leaves behind 2 daughters, Bernadette and Elaine and one son William along with their spouses respectively (the late) Moni, Michael and Susan; 13 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. He will be sadly missed by his two younger surviving brothers, Frank and Patrick, as well as by family, friends and all those who knew him.
Bill was born and raised in Manchester, England. During World War II he served with the British Army as a Regimental Sergeant Major in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Regiment. He was evacuated from Dunkirk in 1940. In 1944, Bill went ashore with the Allied troops during the Normandy landings. From a young age, he developed a keen interest in boxing which continued through his military service, turning professional after the war. He continued with further studies in engineering and attained higher qualifications in electrical engineering.
In 1979, Bill and Dot emigrated to the United States, residing at Pierpoint Pond, Dudley. They spent many happy years there, becoming involved in both local charity work and church work. Bill joined the choir at his parish, Saint Anthony of Padua Church, and continued his membership in the Webster-Dudley Knights of Columbus Council No. 228. He had been a member of the Knights in England. His hobbies included ballroom dancing, swimming and cycling. He was a staunch supporter of the Man-United Football (soccer) Team in England.
The funeral will be held Saturday, August 25, from the Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School Street, with a Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 24 Dudley Hill Road, Dudley. Burial will be in Corbin Cemetery, Dudley. Calling hours will be from 5:00 to 8:00 PM Friday, August 24, in the funeral home.
